<div>Often, when we talk about our need for God our approach is from either a place of desperation or of somberness. There is no better place that those dark times in our life need to lead us. Other times when we consider our need for Christ in the “everyday" it leads us to a place of joy. I love this song by All Sons and Daughters. May it fill you with the joy of Jesus today!</div>

<div>Since I was a little boy I can remember people saying me, “Don’t get your hopes up." I didn’t listen to them then and I don’t listen to them now. I am choosing to put my hope in Jesus, the ultimate hope. I know He’ll never let me down. Check out this song by Josh Baldwin and let it encourage your faith today. </div>

<div>About 10 years ago I lived in Watertown NY. I had some close friends that I met with early every Wednesday morning at a restaurant for breakfast called the Golden Unicorn. They were a group of amazing men. There was a Dr. of Psychology, an Orthopedic Doctor, a JAG Judge in the Army, a very successful businessman, and me. I always felt a little out of place with all of these successful professional men but they were gracious to me and I learned a lot from them. Sometimes we would read a book together and discuss it over our morning breakfast, and other times we would go through seasons of prayer and intercession for one another. One year we decided that we would strengthen a part of our spiritual life that was severely lacking, Scripture memorization. Man, it was tough! We committed to use the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Topical-Memory-System-Navigators/dp/1576839974/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=">Topical Memory System</a> which had a learning one verse per week. Each week would build on previous weeks so that we were reciting not just one week but all of the weeks every Wednesday. Some of us were slackers sometimes but we held each other accountable and it was amazing how much Scripture got stuck inside of us. It was an amazing experience for sure!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I thought that this week we could memorize some verses together. One per day from the NIV. Here’s the first one:</div>

<div>I don’t know about you but I have encountered the hard truth about my life; that I am desperately in need of God to change me. I try to change on my own but, naturally, I fail. What I’m learning is that if I want to be changed by God I must spend time with Him in worship. Ones who worships in Spirit and truth (John 4:23-24) will allow themselves to be transformed by God. We live in an unholy world, but God’s desire is for us to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). Worship allows us to be transformed from the inside out. I love this Old Testament passage that Matt Redman speaks about. Moses was a transformed man. His countenance was changed by God’s presence and everyone saw it. Today let yourself be transformed by the work of God and let His holiness work in you. Let your prayer be, “God make me holy as You are holy."</div>

<div>I have been leading worship for a couple of decades. As a result, I have had countless conversations with people about how we express our worship. I believe that each person expresses worship in different ways, and honestly, I think that’s a beautiful thing. However, one of the things that I have noticed is that far too often people use a phrase such as, “that’s just not how I worship" as an excuse not to grow or not to express worship at all. Having a stubborn heart like that can leave us stagnant, stale and bankrupt in our Spirit. My prayer is that each of us would continually strive to express our love and worship in new ways. Worship is a sacrifice in which we lay down our pride and our control. I encourage you to push past what is comfortable. Sing a little louder. Lift your hands a little higher. Pray a little longer. Give a little more. Remember that worship is not about us, it’s about how amazing God is! Check out what Matt Redman writes:</div>

<div>The revelation of God is the fuel for the fire of our worship. And there is always more fuel for the fire. When we open the eyes of our hearts, God’s revelation comes flying at us from so many different angles. He has revealed Himself to us in creation, throughout the history of His people and overwhelmingly at the cross. And to this day, every breath we breathe is a reminder of our maker, and every hour holds the possibility of living in His presence. We simply need to keep putting ourselves in a place where we’re likely to receive this revelation. The heart of worship is fueled by essential things, such as reading God’s Word, praying to Him and going to church to share fellowship together. There are other ways too, such as getting out into nature -the ocean, mountains or just a field- to soak our souls in the wonder of our creator.</div>

We are staying at a large lake house on one of the Finger Lakes graciously being borrowed for the weekend from a generous friend. <div>Jesus invited His disciples to share times of solitude (group solitude) with Him. “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place" (Mark 6:31–32).</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">Biblically speaking, solitude is a valuable practice. “Alone time" with God can allow God to examine us. It can be a time of knowing God more deeply, a time of strengthening, a time of refreshment, a time of sharing our deepest concerns with God, and a time of simply being with the One who formed us and loves us beyond our understanding.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">Another benefit of periodic times of solitude is that such times allow us to refocus ourselves on what is truly important. It is good, every now and then, to “come away"; we need time spent away from others, away from cell phones, away from television shows, away from the daily grind. We don’t want the “worries of this life" to choke out the Word (Mark 4:19). Rather, we want to spend time with Jesus and, like Mary of Bethany, sit at His feet hearing His word (Luke 10:39).</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">The practice of solitude, like other religious practices, can be taken to an unhealthy extreme. Solitude is not a place to live. We are not to be hermits or cloister ourselves away from society. However, in order to fully enjoy our relationship with God and to fully participate in godly community, we must have times when we relate with God one-on-one.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">The old hymn by Helen Lemmel says it well: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, / Look full in His wonderful face, / And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, / In the light of His glory and grace."</div>

<div/><div>I did not write this article but found it helpful to consider the Biblical case for quiet and solitude. After you read it be sure to invest a few moments in the quiet.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Pastor Joshua</div>
<div> </div><hr/><br/><div>What does the Bible say about the value of solitude?</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">Solitude, the state of being alone, is often considered one of the traditional spiritual disciplines. Many times it is associated with silence. The idea is to be alone with God, to pray, to meditate on His Word, and to simply enjoy His presence. Some people use solitude as a way to distance themselves from the distractions of the world, acknowledge the interior of their hearts, and hear God speak. Being alone can also be used as a time of rest and refreshment.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">The Bible certainly supports the value of solitude. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God." It is much easier to “be still" in solitude. Lamentations 3:25–28 says, “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him."</div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><br/></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">We see examples of God’s people practicing solitude in the Bible. For instance, Moses met regularly with the Lord at the tabernacle (Exodus 33:7, 11). God spoke with Elijah (1 Kings 19) and Jacob (Genesis 32:24–32) while these men were alone. The best example is Jesus, who “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed" (Luke 5:16). Jesus, God Incarnate, spent time alone with His Father. We see Him seeking out solitude after performing miracles (Mark 1:35), in times of grief (Matthew 14:13), before choosing the twelve apostles (Luke 6:12–13), in His distress in Gethsemane (Luke 22:39–44), and at other times. Solitude was a consistent practice in Jesus’ life.</div>

<div><h1 style="text-align: start;"><font style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">In the Quiet -Psalm 37:7-9 </span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> (MSG)</span></font></h1></div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><span style="vertical-align: super; font-size: smaller; font-weight: bold;">7 </span><span>Quiet down before </span><span>God</span><span>,</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><span> </span><span>be prayerful before him.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: start;"><span>Don’t bother with those who climb the ladder,</span></div>
<div><span> </span><span>who elbow their way to the top.</span></div>
<div><span><br/></span></div>
<div>Mid November 9 years ago I was serving at a church in Watertown NY. There were some things happening in my job there that were stressful and challenging. I found myself stewing on the problems. I was stressed to the max. I couldn’t sleep. If I’m honest, I was a mess. My boss (Pastor Bruce) encouraged me to take an extra day off one week and go to a place where it’s quiet. The weather that November had been very mild so I decided I would head up the the High Peaks in the Adirondacks and try to do a solo of climb Mount Marcy. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I woke up at 4 AM one morning and made the long drive from Watertown to the Mount Marcy trail head at the ADK Lodge. I was hiking the trail by 8 AM and there weren’t many people there. My goal was to summit Mount Marcy and while I was going after it with tenacity I probably should have stopped to plan a little bit more. I had brought my crampons (spikes you wear on your boots) but foolishly decided to leave them in the car because they were too heavy and it didn’t seem like I was going to need them. It was relatively easy hiking for the first 6 miles. As I began to get into the higher elevations the trail became more icy and because I had left my crampons in the car I quickly realized that my goal of making the summit was not going to happen. Something funny happened with I resigned myself to turn around and give up the goal. Almost immediately as I began hiking down I felt the nearness of God. I’m fairly confident that He was there the whole time but I was too focused on the goal of making the summit of Mount Marcy. However, that day God had another goal; to meet me in the quiet. I sat down to rest at Marcy Dam and as the wind blew through the trees I felt Jesus begin to melt the stress of my problems away. I didn’t pray anything. I didn’t make any plans. I just sat there in the quiet and let the Holy Spirit minister to me. I had forgotten that the ultimate goal was not to summit a mountain at any cost. Rather, it was to get to a quiet place to be with God, and that’s exactly what happened that November on the Mount Marcy trail. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I don’t know what’s going on in your life this week and I don’t know what mountain you are climbing. You may be faced with stresses that are overwhelming. You may be wrestling with decisions, working through conflict or struggling to make financial ends meet. One thing that you can count on is that God is near and He wants to meet you in the quiet. Take a listen to this song I wrote a little while back and let it set the stage for a week of listening.</div>

<div>Blessings,</div>

<div>Joshua Eiler, 2011</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Verse 1</div>
<div>It’s in the quiet — The deeper dreams are found</div>
<div>In the silence — My courage does resound</div>
<div>It’s in the quiet — God has captured my heart</div>
<div>And in an instant — My fear is ripped apart</div>
<div>Right here in the quiet</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Verse 2</div>
<div>It’s in the quiet — I found that I could live</div>
<div>And rediscover — The power to forgive</div>
<div>It’s in the quiet — That I have met a peace</div>
<div>Beyond comprehension — Where worry is released</div>
<div>Right here in the quiet</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Verse 3</div>
<div>It’s in the quiet — That I found my heart</div>
<div>Bright and burning — Ripping doubt apart</div>
<div>It’s in quiet — That I heard Him speak</div>
<div>There in His presence — His compassion was released</div>

<div>Sometimes I will take my guitar and go to one of unusual places in our church. These spaces have good acoustics and for some reason I feel inspired when I go there. Sometimes I’ll write a song, other times I’ll just sit and worship with a song that we sang on Sunday. They are holy moments. I thought I’d share a song that has been my theme song for the last year. Sing along, make it your prayer and may it encourage you to give God your all. Even those places that we have yet to give fully to Him. An attitude of the heart. A thought pattern. A doubt. A fear. Let your prayer be, “Lord You can have it all."</div>

<div>"To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." - Martin Luther<br/></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Sometimes I think that many of us are overwhelmed with the idea of prayer. Somehow we feel like our prayers need to be long, eloquent and impressive. I’m pretty sure that all of us have people in our life that pray like that. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Can we just get it out of our head that good prayers have to look like that? Some of my most honest, eloquent and heart-felt prayers were just a few words spoken out desperation, gratitude or love. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Today I want to encourage you to pray unhindered by unreasonable expectations. Here are a few things to pray about.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><ol start="1"><li> Think about one thing that you are grateful for and pray a prayer of gratitude.</li><li>Think about someone in your life that is struggling and pray for them.</li><li>Pray that God would enable you to hear His voice this week.</li><li>Pray your deepest burden.</li></ol><div><br/></div>

<div>Who hasn’t heard the song, Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)? There is something about this song that resonates with multitudes of people. Believer and non-believer. Young and not-so-young. Those in triumph and those in tragedy. It’s one of those songs that fills you with courage when you sing it.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>This video is from Hillsong United. They visited the Holy Land, went out on a boat in the sea of Galilee and sang this song where it happened. I’m praying that it would bring you courage today!</div>

<div>I have been journaling on and off since I was in high school. Since the beginning it has been one of the ways that God has spoken to me, given me direction and helped me process through the struggles of living. Sometimes the entries in these journals are about things I want to remember. Sometimes they are songs I’ve written. Sometimes they are quotes that inspire me. Often I find that poems sort of explode from my pen and I find that the poems become prayers. Sometimes the prayers become poems.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I wanted to share one of these poem/prayers today. It was written early on a Sunday morning as a prayer for our church; that we would <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+4%3A24&version=MSG">learn to worship in Spirit and Truth</a>. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div><b>Teach Us To Worship</b></div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Teach us to worship God</div>
<div>To move beyond the mundane,</div>
<div>the comfortable, the average</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Strike our heart with a fire</div>
<div>that blazes in the darkness</div>
<div>of the every day</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Create in us a hunger to pursue holiness,</div>
<div>defeat loneliness</div>
<div>and see the broken hearts of</div>
<div>men, women and children</div>
<div>be made whole and new</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Teach us to worship God</div>
<div>that Your presence would change</div>
<div>the way we speak and how we think</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Let Your kindness fill us to the overflow</div>
<div>and may compassion guide our steps</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Teach us to worship God</div>

<div>Today is Monday. The day after a day in which many of us met together for corporate worship. That means we did it together! <div>For the last several years I have been using this incredible book called: <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Seeking-Gods-Face-Praying-through/dp/0801072646/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493485336&sr=8-1&keywords=seeking+the+face+of+god+praying+through">Seeking God’s Face: Praying Through the Bible Through The Year</a>. It has been an inspiring, insightful and surprising tool to draw me closer to Christ throughout the other 6 days.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>One of the things I love about it is how it directs the reader into passages from both the New and Old Testament. Then it gives you three things to pray about and one prayer to pray over yourself. The prayer often leave me speechless and they linger with me for days. Here’s a short excerpt.</div>

<div>I have long admired a guitarist by the name of Stu Garrard. He was the lead guitarists of the band Delirious back in the 90’s. Many of the worship artists today that are recording the music we listen to were inspired by Stu and Delirious. </div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I wanted to let you know about his new project called, Beautitudes. I’ll let him tell you all about this project that he calls his “life’s work". Buy, borrow, or stream the album. You won’t be disappointed at this collaborative, insightful look into the Sermon on the Mount.</div>

<div>This past weekend during Pastor Steve’s message I was struck by the honesty in one of his statements. He told us that there was a time that he was fearful of reading books that challenged his faith, fearful that they may pose him with a question that would make him doubt his faith. I don’t know about you but I really appreciated hearing him share from his heart.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Later that night as the house was beginning to quiet down I picked up one of the many guitars laying around our house and began writing a song about Pastor Steve’s statement. The song gives voice to the tension between doubt and belief. My prayer is that it would speak to you, enjoy.</div>

<div><br/></div>
<div>Doubt</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Verse 1</div>
<div>There’s a part of me - That seems to want to be</div>
<div>Free from the confines of this reality</div>
<div>That by my very nature - I am nothing more</div>
<div>Than a wounded and wandering, restless soul</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Chorus</div>
<div>I have seen the work of God in me</div>
<div>So I don’t know why doubt colors my eyes</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Verse 2</div>
<div>I’m too scared to go - Where they challenge me</div>
<div>Fearful that they would shake my belief</div>
<div>And that I can’t give an answer - For the questions that they raise</div>
<div>And that my fragile faith would be erased</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Chorus</div>
<div>I have seen the work of God in me</div>
<div>So I don’t know why doubt colors my eyes</div>
<div>I have seen the work of God in me</div>
<div>So I don’t know why doubt colors my eyes</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Bridge</div>
<div>So I’ll be still - And try to know that He’s near</div>
<div>Even when I feel - All alone</div>
<div>Let my prayer be - That faith would arise</div>
<div>Please open my eyes - Open my eyes</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Ending</div>
<div>I have seen the work of God in me</div>
<div>So I don’t know why doubt colors my eyes</div>
